Backgammon - Lord of the Board

Lord of the Board is a digital adaptation of classic backgammon built for quick social sessions on phones and tablets. Beach Bum Ltd., an Israeli studio acquired by Voodoo in 2021, launched it on iOS and Android in 2016 and still updates it actively.

The focus is accessible player-versus-player matches, light progression and live events rather than the analysis tools a serious backgammon student would want. It is free to play, with a virtual coin economy gating table stakes and tournament entries. Coins are earned through gameplay, timed bonuses, friend gifts and events, or bought through optional in-app packages.

There is no real-money gambling here. Coins cannot be cashed out, which is the line that separates this from a gambling product despite the stake-and-pot structure.

LOTB follows standard backgammon. Each player controls 15 checkers on a 24-point board, moving in opposite directions according to two dice. The objective is to move all your checkers into your home board and then bear them off before your opponent does the same.

• Hitting: Landing on a point holding a single opponent checker, a blot, sends that checker to the bar.
• Re-entry: Checkers on the bar must re-enter the opponent's home board before any other move is legal.
• Doubles: Rolling the same number on both dice grants four moves of that value rather than two.
• Gammons and backgammons: Winning before the opponent bears off any checker doubles the stake; winning while they still have checkers in your home board or on the bar triples it.
• Doubling cube: Available at higher levels, letting a player propose doubling the stakes mid-game. The opponent accepts or forfeits.

Controls and flow

Matches are touch-driven. Tap a checker to move it by the higher die, or drag it to any legal point matching either die. Where only one legal move exists the game can auto-move to keep things quick. A dice button starts your roll and a cube button appears when you are eligible to offer a double.

A typical match runs a few minutes. Players are matched by table stake and sometimes by level, which keeps beginners away from the high-risk tables. The winner collects the pot and both players earn XP toward the next level.

Skill against luck

Backgammon mixes chance and strategy: the dice are random but checker placement, blocking and timing are not. Because LOTB is primarily player versus player, outcomes depend on your decisions and your opponent's rather than on a house algorithm. Beach Bum states the dice use a sophisticated random number generator and are completely random. Some players allege streaky or manipulated rolls during losing runs, but those claims are community-reported and unverified, and no independent certification is published either way.

• Quick Play and coin games: Standard one-on-one matches at various stake levels. This is the core loop.
• Play with friends: Challenge Facebook friends directly when both accounts are connected, and send or receive free coins.
• Live tournaments: Bracket events with level and coin entry requirements. Winning multiple rounds pays progressively larger prizes.
• Special events: Limited-time challenges tied to seasons or promotions, rewarding coins, stickers or vouchers.

One thing worth knowing before you download: there is no documented offline or AI practice mode. The whole experience is built around online multiplayer, so you cannot drill against the computer while waiting for a connection.

Progression runs on XP and level. You earn XP for every game played and for certain actions such as accepting a double. Levelling unlocks higher-stakes tables, tournament access with bigger prize pools, and advanced features including the doubling cube. Each table in the lobby shows a minimum level requirement, a soft gate that keeps new players out of high-variance games.

Coins are the sole currency. They enter and leave your balance through table stakes, so every match is a transaction: win and you take the pot, lose and your stake is gone. That single-currency design is why running dry stops you playing entirely rather than just limiting one feature.

Beach Bum does not use traditional promo codes. Instead it distributes one-tap reward links through the official Facebook page and in-game notifications. These credit coins or gifts when opened, generally last around 24 to 48 hours, and work once per account.

The dice complaints are community-reported and unverified.

Cross-play works between iOS and Android, so you can be matched against players on either platform. Cross-save works through a linked Facebook account, which is the thing to set up before switching devices rather than after. Some players report occasional stability issues and heavy promotional prompts, though the app remains actively maintained.

The most common way new players stall is not losing matches, it is running out of coins and having nothing to play with.
